FDA Warns Purdue Pharma over OxyContin Ads

February 11th, 2003 · 31 Comments

The Food and Drug Administration released a warning stating that Purdue Pharma, the maker of the controversial painkiller OxyContin, placed ads in The Journal of the American Medical Association that “grossly overstate” the drug’s safety. The body of the two ads does not mention that OxyContin can cause fatal side effects or discuss its potential for abuse, the FDA said.

The ads also suggested broader use of OxyContin than is approved, a combination of violations that “is especially egregious and alarming in its potential impact on the public health,” says the FDA warning letter to OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma. The letter ordered Purdue to pull any additional advertisements with similar problems.

OxyContin is a long-lasting version of oxycodone, a narcotic that is prescribed to patients suffering long-term, severe pain from cancer or other illnesses. The tablet provides 12 hours of pain relief when swallowed whole.

OxyContin can produce a quick and potentially lethal high if chewed, snorted or injected. It has been linked to more than 100 deaths and has the FDA’s strongest warning label, which says the drug is as potentially addictive as morphine.

This is HORRIBLE situation; legitimate pain patients have been denied access to one of the few pain medications that proved effective! I have been a chronic pain patient since the 1980’s (fibromyalgia, a congenital neck vertebrae deformity which caused severe muscle pain, nerve impingements, sciatica and other dxs that also cause pain). As soon as some criminals starting abusing the medicine Oxycontin (using the medicine in a totally illegal, dangerous and irresponsible manner not intended) and the news media made a huge sensation of the whole ordeal, the pain MD’s in a pain clinic I regularly went to would no longer prescribe the medicine (though I was never addicted to it nor ever abused it) because they were so frightened the DEA would come after them. They ended up closing the whole pain clinic (and I live in a small town and am very often unable to travel any great distance).

I don’t know why we pain patients have to suffer over the acts of the criminal few.

I emailed the DEA with my concerns and they didn’t even have the courtesy of returning my email!

Anyone who abused the medication and died is responsible for misuese of the medicine not the companies who formulated the medicine!

Medical litigation is TOTALLY out of control.

Thank God my MD continued the patches I now wear but they don’t work as well as the Oxycontin did.

If any drug company wants me to testify on their behalf concerning usage of Oxycontin by a legitimate pain patient I would gladly do it.

A pox on a totally unsympathetic out of control DEA!

I am all for going after criminals but they went after MD’s who were guilty only of compassion.

I am totally sick of being hampered in my relief from pain from doctor’s who are too frightened to write a prescription for me for Oxycodone (I’m in Australia). Just because a select few choose to abuse this most important drug is absolutely no reason why I should suffer at their hands. Even with a electrical stimulator implant I STILL have pain in my left ulnar nerve and have to take Oxycodone. I am very afraid that the time will come when my doctor will no longer write me prescriptions for this valuable medication. By the way, I HATE how this medication makes me feel. I could never take it on a “regular” basis as a drug addict might. YUCK!

My son has been taking prescription oxycontin for three years at increasing dosages and developed an addiction. He had a spinal cord injury which has’nt changed and this drug has also caused major complications with consstipation. This drug should not be prescribed for pain due to nerve damage, it doesn’t work.

Oxycontin is the miracle that has given me my life back! I have been in 2 car crashes and wrecked a motorcycle and before Oxycontin I lived in unbearable pain which made my life horrible and depressing. I tried every alternative to treat my pain including physical therapy, electro stimulation, chiropractic, massage therapy and more. Then I finally dicovered Oxycontin which gave me back a pain free life without having to worry about distroying my liver and kidneys with other painkillers that contained acetometophen like Vicodin and Percocet. I’ve read that Tylonol and Advil killed like 16,000 people last year and Oxycontin MAY have contributed to around 200 deaths. I think the FDA and DEA should leave Purdue Pharma alone and go after Tylenol and Advil. After all, Which one killed more people by far? Oxycontin is by far a safer drug. Who wants to take Tylenol which doesent work, and causes internal bleeding? Oxycontin has gotten a very bad rep from the press, but I also doubt they are chronic pain sufferers and can not appreciate the value of this miracle drug. I, like millions of people fear the day when we can no longer get this life giving medicine because their doctor is too scared to prescribe this very safe, effective, and minimal side effect medicine because the DEA is putting good, compassionate doctors behind bars. What has this country come to?

I am a 56 year old African American I have been suffering a chronic condition for about 10 years I had 5 operations on my hand and elbow in trying to free up the nerve that was believed to be the cause of the pain but nothing helped I have had to many procedures to ention in this em, but then it was decided to treat the symptom since we could not find the exact cause, I was prescribed oxycontin for it’s long lasting effect, and percocet for brealthrough pain that worked well, then I discovered that warm sunshine caused be to feel a lot better, and sometimes I was able to take less pain so I decided to take a three month stay in Arizona, that felt a lot better but I did not want to be in an area, without a MD to monitor the meds, WOW man I was treated like I was a leper, I went to three different doctors, they would not even see me more than once and some were pain specialist, I don’t know whether it was because I am African America or it was the Oxycontin but it was crazy so I have ro go Back to the other state just get refills, I don’t take a lot of by Rush’s standard ut it does work fine I doin’t get high I just get pain relief thank God for Oxycontin get of the good doctors back and let them do their job in taking care of patients. I HAVE BEEN SUFFERING WITH BACK PAIN FOR AT LEAST 10 YEARS AND THE PAIN WAS GETTING WORSE ALL THE TIME. NOTHING HELPED ME, I HAD NO LIFE, I COULDN’T EVEN WALK BECAUSE OF THE SERVE PAIN IN MY NECK, BACK AND SPINE. THANKS TO OXYCONTIN I FINALLY HAVE MY LIFE BACK. IF THE MEDICATION IS TAKEN THE WAY THE DOCTOR TELLS YOU TO TAKE IT, THERE ISN’T ANYTHING WRONG WITH THEM, THEY ARE A LIFE SAVER. IT’S THE ADDICTS WHO GET THERE HANDS ON THE PILLS AND ABUSE THEM AND BECAUSE OF THIS THEY WANT TO REMOVE IT FROM THE PEOPLE. I DON’T THINK THIS IS FAIR TO THE PEOPLE WHO REALLY NEED IT FOR THE PAIN THERE IN, WHY SHOULD THE SICK PEOPLE SUFFER BECAUSE OF THE ADDICTS OUT THERE. IF THEY DO AWAY WITH OXYCONTIN THEY WILL BE HURTING THE PEOPLE WHO TAKE IT FOR A GOOD REASON, THEY WANT TO LIVE WITHOUT PAIN AND TRY TO ENJOY LIFE. IF ANYTHING THE GOVERMENT SHOULD GO AFTER THE ADDICTS WHO ARE TAKING THEM WITHOUT A PERSRIPTION WHO BUY THEM FROM PEOPLE ILLEGALLY OFF THE STREETS. I THANK GOD FOR MY DOCTOR GIVING ME THEM, I COULDN’T DO A THING WITHOUT THEM BECAUSE OF THE SERVE PAIN I LIVE IN, I WOULD GLADLY TESTIFY ON BEHALF OF THE COMPANY WHO PUTS THEM OUT THERE, THEY ARE THINKING OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE IN PAIN DAY AND NIGHT AND HAVE NO LIFE. I DON’T KNOW WHAT I WOULD DO IF THEY TOOK THEM OFF THE MARKET. I COULDN’T LIVE WITH THE PAIN I’M IN EVERYDAY. BEFORE PEOPLE CONDEM THE MEDICATION, THEY SHOULD THANK GOD THAT THEY AREN’T IN ANY PAIN AND I MEAN SERVE PAIN THAT NOTHING ELSE HELPS BUT THIS MEDICATION. NO ONE KNOWS HOW IT IS TO BE IN SERVE PAIN DAY AND NIGHT AND CAN’T DO ANYTHING AT ALL. I AM ALL FOR GOING AFTER THE CRIMINALS BUT THEY WENT AFTER THE DOCTORS THAT HAVE COMPASSION FOR THE PEOPLE IN PAIN: PATRICIA D’ANTONIO ON FEBUARY 23,2004.

I’ve been reading all of the headlines about how oxycontin is the most abused medication by addicts and the amount of deaths attributed supposedly to oxycontin but it is the person taking the medication that is at fault. Any person knows that if you take too much of a prescribed medication that it can cause bodily damage or death, the same goes for OTC drugs are we going to seek out what drugs the person took too much of and take these off the market as well? As for oxycontin causing constipation, almost every drug a person is prescribed can cause either diarrhea or constipation that is where we decide if the risk of taking this drug out weighs the benefit. For me I started taking oxycontin 3 years ago for Fibromyalgia Pain, and OA, if not for the benefit of the time release I could not function the way I do now and would be a zombie, before oxycontin I was feeding my liver with 12 tylenol, 8 200 mg motrin, 3 tabs of midrin/ 3 fiorcet for headache, 1 imitrex, plus 3 tylenol pm, and 1-2 lortab 10 mg every day, so I could get through my day. So I thank god for my Dr. and Oxycontin because I no longer have to survive on all these medications to control my pain, and I would gladly testify for makers of oxycontin. Thank You Darlene Conder

    thank you

I have had cronic headaches for the past 3 years, Oxycontin was the only thing that took away the pain. My Dr. took me from 15mg a day to over 400mg a day, now im just a junky with a headache thanks to my DR. who kept telling me that the amount I was takeing was safe. Yes it should be leagle, but the people who perscribe it need to be more carefull.

  • Brenda R // Jun 29, 2004 at 8:19 pm

In repsonse to Jane A Posted 10/19/03 Were you aware that Oxycontin is a drug that is only used for someone who needs to take it everyday. It is not a as needed drug nor is it prescribed that way. I noticed in re: to oxycodone you stated” I HATE how this medication makes me feel. I could never take it on a “regular” basis as a drug addict might. YUCK! “Just a FYI. Hope you are feeling better.

My husband never intended to become and addict from his miracle drug, oxycontin. But the mild increase through the years became at a cost to his over all health, family life and mental stability due to using oxycontin for 5 years. It does get the best of you and will turn a non addict into a full fledged additic.(Mock my words!!) I, as a spouse could not stand by and watch as it deteriated his brain, and his judgement. He no longer takes perscription oxy but will now take any drug available, on or off the market.

I just want all users and spouses to be aware of oxy’s sneak attack on people and watch for all the signs of addictions before it gets the best of you, and your loved ones. It surely took a toll on my husbands life and marraige of 30 years.

I was in a work accident and was perscribed oxys, the ones who do not have a life threatening problem have no reason being on oxys they destroy everything in your life and its uncontrolable,i took them for 5 years and swore they were the best thing that ever happened to me also but when i started trying to stop them it was misery and i mean pure misery it had gotten so far out of control and I had not even realized it,i quit interacting with my spouse,i quit interacting with my children the only thing that mattered was the drug,i dont consider myself much better off now because every sence ive given up oxys ive been on methadone, and at least i have a leval head and some money in my pocket unlike before, the company that makes oc’s are guilty of not informing people of the truth is what they are guilty of,the drug has a place in our society but if you are not gonna die then they are not for you because by takeing them you are slowly killing yourself and the loved ones around you, dont lie to yourself this drug is bad and should be strictly regulated for certain situations ONLY…and all thats being put on the drug needs to be informed of the things the drug can and will do to your life, all im sayen is the company who made the drug should come to terms with the people who really know, the ones they let down…the money they pay will be a drop in the bucket of what ive lost in life and yea i blame myself for being so damn lame and not checking more into the drug when i was put on it….But what do we have doctors for,do we always have to second guess them?I dont know i dont have the answers if i did i wouldnt be writeing this….But take it from someone who knows oxys are a drug that will turn a non drug user into a junkie from hell…Watch your step.

I was having tremendous pain in my arm due to an accident. I took the drug just as my doctor ordered. I almost lost my life. I could no longer function and carry out my daily activities. I almost drown in my own bathtub. While smoking a cigarette I burned the whole side of my face and never even felt the pain. After my family saw the condition I was in my mother had me stop taking it and it was the worst 15 days of my life. I am still in pain but at least I know I am alive and now functioning in a more normal life style. Had I not stopped this drug when I did, there is no doubt I would be dead.

I am a 48 yr old male who suffers from Ankylosing Spondilitis(Arthritis of the Spine) and Osteoarthritis. My Doctors tried everything under the sun to give me some form of pain relief. The only thing that worked after years of suffering and searching was Oxycontin. This medication has given me my life back. I can walk normally again, I can sleep at night, I’m not screaming out in pain and scaring my wife and kids! I’m finally able to get off my butt and go back to school to become a history teacher…..thank God for Oxycontin! I hope the DEA will leave all the good and compassionate Doctors out there alone and let them practice medicine the way they should! We in pain should not have to suffer because a bunch of drug fiends love this medication! Thank You

Doc says is a liar. First of all Percocet and oxycotin are the same exact drug. Both are oxycodone. The only difference is one is slow release. The only way that any narcotic drug kills anyone is by depressing the breathing center. The only way.

It is certainly not the manufactures fault if his patient abuses the drug by using it in a way not intended(i.e. grinding it up)Doc is not a Doctor and has no understanding of medicine.

Hospital have injectable morphine. people need oxycotin for home use. The vast majority of people use these drugs correctly and it allows them to lead productive lives. The people who don’t, either by abuse, increasing does, whathave you, have no right just because they can not handle the medication demand it be taken off the market so the people who can handle it and whom it allows to have productive lives will have to live without it.

The same case can be made for alochol. Most people can use it with no problem. A few become a danger. Yet no one demands that taken off the market.

I live with more ailments than I care to mention. But I will,I have been living with pain for almost 40 years, All dealing with my spine and neck. I have 5 rupturesin my middle back due to a drug driver, prior to that I have a rupture at l4l5 and a bulge and rupture at c4c5 scolliosis, ostioarthritis, and the list goes on. there is not a pain med that I have not tried. and Oxycontin is my return to a normal sort of life. I to would be willing to testify to the effectivness of this drug.PLEASE if there is any thing that I can do to help further the fight to keep this medication on the market I would be more than happy to.Because I know that if they take this away from us there is no telling what honest people will resort to to get the releife that they so very badly are in need of. Thank You for hearing me. Respectfully J.L.Jacobs

I THINK THAT OXYCONTIN SHOULD BE ILLEGAL. THIS DRUG IS NOT VERY SAFE. MOST PEOPLE GET ADDITICED TO IT. AND USE IT FOR THERE OWN PLEASURE. IF IT WAS UP TO ME OXYCONTIN WOULD BE ILLEGAL. MUST PEOPLE DONT EVEN USE IT FOR PAIN RELIEF. THEY JUST USE IT TO GET A HIGH. BECAUSE THEY GET ADDICTIED TO IT VERY QUICKLY. AND YOU GET GET IT JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE. OFF THE ENERTNET, ON THE STREET, FROM DOCTORS, AND OTHER SOURCES. SO I THINK IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL SO PEOPLE WONT HURT THEM SELFS ANY MORE BY TAKEN THIS DRUG.

I am only 38years old and was told i had severe osteoarthritis. Which i was told that it was equal to a 70 year old person. I have two children and a husband and work which i constantly lived through with pain so severe i couldn’t even get out of bed in the morning. I went to a pain specialist and put me on oxy which was a godsend but what i didn’t no was that you start at 10 mg then go up to 20mg than once you no it your on 40 mg and that still isn’t enough. I tried to stop taking it because even though yes it work beyond belief there has to be something out there that is going to help if not as well close to it. what people don’t realize it is so addictive it is like an alcoholic when one drink isn’t enough and they need more for the same relief. I wish i new all this before because now i no my life will change which breaks my heart but i can’t let it run my life and those around me.

poor Tiffani.she didn’t know she was an addict.maybe if she read and followed directions, she might have realized she was using the med to get “high”.now she wants to sue the doctor.these days its always somebody elses fault!”doc” says the manufacturer is at fault for his patient “snorting pills!!!People-it is the same issue with firearms.they can be used for good or evil-BUT IT IS THE PERSON NOT THE WEAPON!our government has no problems providing false info to go to war against a country that never attacked us and killing THOUSANDS OF UNARMED INNOCENT WOMEN AND CHILDREN.do you think these people who work for the GOV are worried if you are in pain.they know when they are in pain their doctor will prescribe no problem.but because some people get addicted, those that need it have a hard time.funny-you can get chemotherapy&radiation which WILL KILL you-no problem!!!you can get statins, heartburn relief,anti- depressants and all other sorts of meds that you have to take for the rest of your life-no problem!!!IN pain? YOU HAVE THE NERVE TO WANT RELIEF?NO WAY! YOU MIGHT GET ADDICTED.SHAME ON YOU ,SUCK IT UP!WHAT IF YOU HAD AN INFECTION THAT NEVER WENT AWAY? by the way,i wonder what the salary range is for DEA personnel?what would they do if they didn’t have to perform these “control”functions?maybe they would have to resort to one [or two]of those “new” jobs created rececntly.there seems to be an attitude that Jesus suffered,so we must ALL suffer.Just remember EVERYONE,IT WAS THE PEOPLE IN CONTROL THAT MADE[OR ALLOWED} HIM TO SUFFER.AND NOBODY STAYS IN CONTROL FOREVER!The DEA does good things for us,and thanks for the job they do to protect us!!!If you are addicted, get help.for the patients who are suffering from chronic pain, please don’t add to their problems by undertreating.health care is a practice, and right now pain meds are the best available option to the public.

I just began taking 20mg Oxycontin twice a day for Fibromayalgia (FM) and Insterstitial Cystitis (IC)The Oxy helps my IC but doesn’t help much with my fibro. My ankles, knees and hips still feel broken–I can barely walk. I tried Vicodin 5/500 for several months with no relief. The oxy works SORT OF if I stay in bed off my feet. Grateful it knocks out the IC pain though. I don’t like the way I feel on Oxy and don’t understand how people can become addicted. It’s somewhat unplesant, and I’m often drowsy in the daytime. But I figure it’s better than all that Tylenol in the Hydrocone. As far as pain meds go, I need something stronger but no idea what. It’s awful trying to walk when it feels like your ankles, knees and hips are broken. (yes, it’s definately fibromyalgia–a severe “flare.”) Glad Oxy is helping others, and please don’t blame the maufacturer. The insert is quite clear about dosage and NOT breaking up the pills. I’ll continue to take it despite the nausea and hope it will eventually work. Chronic and severe pain ruins your life–anything that helps is welcome. About Dr. paranoia–that’s a shame. My best friend is a Dr. in Spain and says it’s common practice to get people out of pain first, and deal with any addiction issues later. I agree–it’s a quality of life issue. I won’t get addicted to Oxy, I just want relief. Addicts are ruining it for the rest of us. Hear that, Rush Limbaugh???

I have side effects from cancer treatment that have left me with a great deal of pain. Oxycontin works great and I experience no pain. I do not get any buzz or euphoria and have talked with other pain patients and the drug works but we don’t experience any ‘additional’ feelings. I certainly hope the DEA and other Federal groups leave it up to the doctor and patient to determine what is proper.

to victoria(and any other fibro sufferers): i also suffered from severe pain from fibro/nerve damage i also have pain from failed back surgury. i have had 5 surgeries in my lower back and 2 in the cervical area. i have been in 4 major auto accidents, the last one 2 yrs ago. let me tell you i know about pain and i know about pain killers. about 3 yrs ago i was diagnosed with fibro. ok that explains why i still hurt all the time even tho i was taking a lot of pain killers. i was on lortab then oxycontin. my dr said it wont do any good to take pain meds for fibro and she was right it didnt help at all for that pain. i just met a dr who told me about a new anti depressant that is also used for nerve pain. it is called cymbalta and i strongly urge you to talk to your dr about it. i started taking it just last week and i can already feel the difference. the med is called cymbalta, it is not habit forming (physically dependent) or psychologically addicted (there is a big difference in those two things)and you dont build up a tolerance to it (you dont need stronger and stronger doses to get the same pain relief). good luck

  • mrp // Sep 4, 2005 at 12:27 am

FACT: If taken as PRESCRIBED by a PHYSICIAN there is NO WAY IN HELL you can become addicted. You can become DEPENDENT when taken as prescribed because you need it for pain and your body has become accustomed to it. If taken every 10-12 hours regularly as PRESCRIBED it keeps a steady rate of pain killing medicine in your system. If you are a moron and take it at NON-REGULARY intervals you will have ADDICTION symptoms. If you are taking “break through” pain medicines you are headed for disaster. All you are doing is setting your self up for ADDICTION. elevating or rollercoasting the narcotics in your system. Oxycontin is designed for a CONSTANT RATE of the drug. THIS IS A FACT. If you go up in dosage you go up GRADUALLY just like you lower your does GRADUALLY. Those of us who are FOLLOWING DOCTORS PRESCRIPTIONS know this. All the rest is just smoke and talk…

IT KILLED MY FRIEND AND DESTROYED MY LIVING ROOM WALLS AND I SUFFER ON IN SHAME,POVERTY AND DISGRACE AND THERE IS ONLY A LARGE SUM OF MONEY TO TREAT THIS KIND OF PAIN WITH………..

Just insert whatever item instead of Oxycontin or Purdue Pharmaca and it’s the same old story. It isn’t MY FAULT.. It’s some else fault. I’m a moron is there a LAWYER IN THE HOUSE!

The FDA, pompus self righteous do nothing hypocrites who have N O T H I N G to say about alchohol related deaths kill over 140,000 a year and they are getting their knickers in a twit over 100 deaths?? (laughing) Stupendous!

“OxyContin is a long-lasting version of oxycodone, a narcotic that is prescribed to patients suffering long-term, severe pain from cancer or other illnesses. The tablet provides 12 hours of pain relief when swallowed whole.

OxyContin can produce a quick and potentially lethal high if chewed, snorted or injected. It has been linked to more than 100 deaths and has the FDA’s strongest warning label, which says the drug is as potentially addictive as morphine”

I only wish oxycontin has only killed 100 people. Satin himself made oxycontin, if you dont believe me go to a web site called oxyabusekills.com/victims. I hope you all will relize how addicting and fatal oxycontin truly is.
