Study Suggests Ibuprofen Might be Dangerous for Heart Patients

February 22nd, 2003 · 6 Comments

New research suggests ibuprofen may be dangerous for most heart patients because it can block the blood-thinning benefits of aspirin. Researchers discovered those heart patients taking both aspirin and ibuprofen were twice as likely to die during the study period as those who were taking aspirin alone or with other types of common pain relievers. Scientists believe aspirin is unable to thin the blood because ibuprofen clogs a channel inside a clotting protein that aspirin acts on.

For every 1,000 patients treated, there were 12 extra deaths a year when ibuprofen was taken with aspirin, according to the medical records of 7,107 heart patients who had been discharged from hospitals between 1989 and 1997 with aspirin prescriptions.

Aspirin is considered the most important medicine for heart disease because it prevents the clots that cause heart attacks and strokes.

I am a school nurse at a high school. I am concerned about some of the “rumors” I have heard about the dangers of dispensing ibuprofen to high school age children. Can someone enlighten me on any concerns that I should have?

    Thank you

I have recently been told that Ibuprofen can cause all kinds of medical problems. I was also told that it can cause blindness. My family gives their children Ibuprofen everytime their children get even a small sniffle. Should I be concerned for the children? Can you please give me any information you may have on this subject?

I took large doses of ibuprofen for many years (20+ yrs) for rheumatoid arthritis. Some years, I was taking 800 mg tablets four or more times a day. I developed vasculitis in my kidneys and now have chronic kidney disease. I absolutely believe that this was caused by the ibuprofen usage somehow. Nobody in my family has any history of kidney disease and I never had any kidney problems growing up.
