UnumProvident Corp., the nation’s largest disability insurer, was fined $1 million by Georgia insurance regulators after investigating complaints about the company’s claims handling procedures.

State Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine said in a statement that his agency’s investigation showed UnumProvident had a corporate mentality of “looking for every technical legal way to avoid paying a claim.”

UnumProvident is facing hundreds of lawsuits filed by policyholders who allege the company denies claims and requires its medical employees to support the denials. The company insures about 25 million people.

UnumProvident, which claims about 30 percent of the nation’s disability insurance business, has said that the vast majority of policyholders are pleased with their treatment.

I was approved for SSA Dis. for 5 to 7 reasons but i was being paid by unum for only one of those reasons. The back payment to be reimbersed to the unum co should only amount to 1/5 to 1/7 of the backpayment from SSA. can anyone contact me with a similar current or past fight with unum with advise or reaction.
