After ordering a two-month long investigation and legal analysis, the Tenet Shareholder Committee said the health care services company may face up to $6 billion in legal liability to the federal government as a result of an unlawful scheme to defraud Medicare.
“Faced with the growing number of government probes, Tenet’s Board of Directors had the responsibility to form a special committee of the Board and hire outside counsel to conduct its own independent investigation,” said M. Lee Pearce, M.D. chairman of the Tenet Shareholder Committee.
“When it became clear that Tenet’s Board was not going to act, the Tenet Shareholder Committee commissioned its own study of the legal liability with regard to Medicare outliers,” Pearce continued. “Although there are many other serious problems at Tenet, we concentrated this study on the significant outlier issue.”
The shareholder committee said it hired a team of six attorneys under the leadership of the Committee’s general counsel, Gary E. Cripe, to examine Tenet’s practices, Medicare regulations, and federal heath care civil and criminal statutes.

Tenet is billing me for 1,056.99 that my insurance company stated I was not responsible for. This bill is for surgery on my child done literally over 1 year ago! I jsut received it in the mail and when I called Tenet, the Girl I spoke to Kami told me that whatever my Ins. Co. has said “it didnt matter a hill of beans” I was appauled and got her name and hung up. My ins. Com is contacting them to tell them to sort this out. See, I have 5 names from my Ins co and two from tenet that I recorded over a year ago on this surgery to make sure of exactly what I was to pay. Even the People at Tenet I spoke to were in agreement. My EOB statements indicate I am not to pay that amt…they are to write it off per their contract with my ins. co. I asked Kami why now, after one year..am I receiving a bill!!! She said she couldnt answer that but…she seemed to know that again, “whatever my ins. co. told me didnt matter a hill of beans” Oh, and I add, she laughed after saying that!
