I've been on Paxil for 7 years (started at 14 due to a stupid, gullible mother and a thoughtless shrink)and have now quit. I'm beginning to fear what it may have done to me. I keep reading about increased risk of breast cancer, brain damage, damaged DNA and strange diseases I can't pronounce, all having to do with Paxil.

The withdrawals are pure hell. 99% of the time I can't stand up without getting nauseous. I have to ask my boyfriend to get things for me when I feel this way, and I know I'm a burden to him. I feel so guilty for being do demanding. The mood fluctuations are scary, and I often get angry with him for the smallest infraction. My hearing is so sensitive that his breathing keeps me awake, and I can't sleep in the same room as him. He's been tolerant and helpful so far, but I'm wondering how long it will last. I'm very worried that Paxil withdrawal will be the ruination of my first relationship, which I hoped would be my only.

Am I the only one here who would like to round up everyone who had a hand in Paxil and stuff the shit down their throats for years, only to yank them off of it cold turkey?

I also lost my job a few months after my docotor prescribed Paxil. I am still out of work and in pain and now have paripheal neuropathy. My mother and sister were also prescribed it and are experiencing the same pain and dementia. I was having twitches and muscle spasms. The doctor taht prescribed it has told me he doesnt want to treat me any longer and left me hopeless. I think sometimes the doctors use this drug to keep their offices busy but I cant imagine anyone doing this much damage on purpose. I am getting ready to see a Rhuematologist but there are so many things wrong since starting this medication its hard to tell what exactly the problem is. If anyone has any information please let me know...

I was taking Celexa and then changed to Paxil. I just found out that I have Severe Spinal Stenosis. Has anyone else experienced this due to taking these medications? Please email me if you have any information.

On June 24 2004 at 10:00 am I went to the Veterans Hospital, ERP clinic on the 6th floor, in Houston,Texas, to consult with an M.D.physician for psychiatric medication. The consultation was for panic attacks that I would get after eating. I was directed from the ERP clinic to check-in the PEAC clinic for an initial consultation. The consultation was with a nurse,I was unaware that the nurse was not an M.D. at the time of consultation. The nurse review my records from the computer data base and recommended 20 mg of paxil daily. I ingested 20 mg of paxil at the hospital, waited 5 minutes and left the hospital to get something to eat. I went to a fast food place to eat, which took no more than 15 minutes to receive my meal. I sat down to eat and felt a uncomfortable feeling in my stomach. I left my meal untouched jumped in my truck and went straight home. I walked in the apartment an began experiencing the effects of overdosing on paxil. The dosage was more than my body and mind could tolerate. I will admit, I wanted to committ suicide at that time, it seemed to be the sweetest way out from the most horrible struggle in my life. Never in all my life had I fought so hard, mentally and physically in desperation for and end to the torture I experienced from an overdose of paxil. Although I survived the overdose their was permanent brain damage. I sleep twice as much, lose concentration easily, have convolsions, anxiety and panic attacks countinuously( sleep or awake), headaches, stomach problems, just to mention a few. I take 1 mg of clonazepam daily to help stabilize some of the damged done by paxil. I have an FTCA pending for suing the Goverment of the United States for liability. The hardest battle was surviving the paxil overdose. Suing the Goverment for liability will be very easy.

Tamye - I feel for you and hope you do some research on "paxil and akathisia", and/or "SSRIs and akathisia" and also on

"David Healy, protocol for withdrawal of SSRIs". It is SO IMPORTANT that you find all this out when your child is showing adverse effects because there is still much skepticism (?sp) on the part of a lot of psychs and you need to become the informed one for the sake of the child's safety. Don't panic and stop the paxil suddenly because tapering off paxil (or any other SSRI) needs to be done VERY SLOWLY (possibly over months) in VERY small increments if a child (or adult) is having withdrawals.

There is also a "paxil petition" which will give you some idea of what both adults and children go through during withdrawal and how careful you'd need to be. I'm worried about putting the urls to these sites because it might be considered an advertisement and so deleted. All the very best to you and to everyone else who has children on paxil or other SSRIs, when adults sometimes fail to make it through an SSRI its easy to understand how some children fail also.

Isn't is funny (not really) how it seems we never hear about these things until it affects us and we go surfing for answers. My son is 11 years old and his psychiatrist put him on 12.5mg. of Paxil CR twice a day back at the end of May, and for the first 3-4 weeks he was a totally different kid. So easy to get along with, didn't have to be told to go to bed, didn't argue with any of us much! Now here it is about three months later and he took all of his pills one night (luckily for us there were only 3) why he did this I'm not sure because when I told him that I couldn't stand it if he hurt himself he said why what would it do? I told him it could kill him and big old tears came rolling down his cheeks. Did he not realize this?? If he didn't then why did he do it? Anyway we have tried four times to talk to his Dr. and the nurse says that he won't talk to us without and appt. and that will be Oct. 27!! He hits himself in the head, legs, wherever he can to hurt himself, he is combative, refuses to go to school, screams and throws things, verbally abusive, cleared off the two tables today!!! It is like I am looking at a demon instead of my child!! He has started this uncontrollable twitching of his feet or hands. It scares the CRAP out of me!!! If anyone has any suggestions about what measures I can take to deal with this Dr. please let me know!! I love my little boy with all my heart and that is why I was and am trying to get him help for depression (he sometimes says he wishes he was dead and this is the reason for the psychiatrist in the first place)!!!!

yah i think if the drug does that it should have been stopped, but!! I am on Paxil and everytime I change it I get deathly sick and get such bad anxiety and depression so if they take it away I am afraid of what will happen to me. It works so good for me. :-(

Ms S

What you have described is exactly what happened to 5 members of my family, I lost my job within 2 months of starting paxil. Now we have dimentia, neoplasms of the brain-which causes paripheral neuropathy; We can no longer do mental or physical work ( but I can sing! and I enjoy it)-I would consider getting the doctors records; if they did not do the blood work to test for the proper metabolizing emzyme, I would say you have a case. Remember this is a common know reaction in the medical profession they believe only 1 in 1000, I am still fighting to get the PET test to see if there is anything treatable from paxil damage but I can not get doctors whom wil help. I it happens to adult it happens to kids. Look at all the children permanently damaged from ritalin or or psychiatric drugs.

The thyroid should be checked; if a person can not metabolize SSRI's of which paxil is one; the pineal gland a pea size area in the centre of the tryroid becomes damaged.

can someone please tell me if the drug Paxil causes behavior problems in children. I have a 10 yr old daughter that is out of controll with her mouth, she's rude, doesn't think before speaking, impulsive, mean hurtful and the list goes on. I need to know if this medication will cause this attitude in my child or is it just bad behavior??
