Zyprexa, Risperdal and Clozaril May Increase Risk of Pancreatitis

September 3rd, 2003 · 25 Comments

Atypical anti-psychotic drugs Clozaril, Zyprexa and Risperdal may increase a patients’ risk of developing pancreatitis when compared with older drugs like Haldol, according to a new study published in the September issue of the journal Pharmacotherapy.

The analysis was based on 192 cases of pancreatitis reported to the Food and Drug Administration or written up in medical journals between January 1981 and February 2000. The New York Times reported that researchers “found that more cases were associated with three newer drugs than with an older generation drug.”

According to their findings, 72 cases occurred in patients taking Clozaril, 62 in patients taking Zyprexa, 31 in patients taking Risperdal, and 12 in patients taking Haldol. The remaining 15 cases occurred among patients who took more than one antipsychotic drug, the New York Times reported.

Researchers also discovered 22 patients with pancreatitis died.

“We’re seeing differences in the number of cases reported with Haldol and with newer drugs but we don’t know why,” said Dr. P. Murali Doraiswamy, chief of the division of biological psychiatry at Duke University. “Nothing in this report should deter or discourage anyone from the appropriate use of newer anti-psychotics,” Dr. Doraiswamy said.

Who can I contact about this? I take Zyprexa, and I have chronic pancreatitis. I just turned 31, don’t drink, my gall bladder has been removed, and the doctors “have no idea” why I have pancreatitis!!!

My son was taking pschotropic drugs for schizophrenia, and died last spring of pancreatitis suddenly at age 31. He had taking zyprexa and was also getting injections of haldol monthly. He had taken clozaril and risperdal in the past.

I had been looking up pacreatitis and all the info pointed to alcohol with some tobacco causes. He did smoke cigarets a lot, but seldom drank alcohol. This information on your site shows me, that most likely it was the psychotropics that caused his death.

Please email me if you know of anyone who suffered side effects from Zyprexa such as hallucinations, lapse of judgement, racing thoughts or similiar effects.

I am currently 35 weeks pregnate and my doctors put me on zyprexa for unspecified schizophrenia. I have been sick the entire pregnacy including several hospitalizations. The doctors told me that if i did not take the meds they could take my baby. Now i have been forced to take a medication that could cause me long term effects as well as my baby. Is there anything I can do? they will not change my meds nor take me off of them. Can someone please let me know what I can do about this?

My 25yr old son is autistic and has lost about 55lbs. Since going on Zyperxa. This is despite his having a BIG appetite. He is 6′1″”and is terribly thin in my opinion. His doctor has taken him off Zprexa because of this,

They now have me on risperadol! Is it insane for me to be taking it? If anyone who has information about this would email me, I would greatly appreciate it! I was hospitalized probably close to 10 times last year alone, and have problems with my pancreatitis 7 out of 10 days!

My situation is close to Alicia Crego’s. I am currently 35 weeks pregnant and came down with pancreatitis when I was about 22 weeks along. My gallbladder was removed 9 years ago, I don’t drink, and I don’t have diabetes. I took Zyprexa about a year and a half ago for only a month, but I’m wondering if that’s why I now have Pancreatitis. I certainly don’t have any risk factors for it and my Doctors have no clue as to why I have it. I’m going to have to deliver early because of the amount of pain medication I’ve had to be on to control it. My baby might even have to be de-toxed because of it. I know there’s a class action law suit against Eli-lily right now. They are the one’s who made Zyprexa. I’ve contacted them and we’ll see where it goes. I can’t remember the phone number, but it’s a commercial I’ve seen on the History Channel several times. You all might want to watch for the ad and call them. Good luck to everyone!

Took Zyprexa for apx 10 months for PTDS I came down with Ketoacidstosis (spelling wrong) was hospiltilized with a glucose of over 950+ I went for about 2 months before being hospitilized I have full blown Daibetes.

    2) I have been hospitilized 7 times since using this Zyprexa for pancreantitis I now have a diagnosis of Chronic recurring pancreantitis.

    3) Found out this past July I am now terminally Ill do to complications of Diabtetes.

    I suggest the following:

DO NOT TAKE ANY OF THIS NEW MEDICINE BEING RELEASED IT IS NOT STUDIED ENOUGH. To many greedy pill makers out there and pushing the FDA to put medicine in the main stream without proper testing. USE THE OLD MEDICINE that the Doctors for fact know the side effects.

    3) IF you feel you have been done wrong by taking ANY medication given to you CONTACT a LAWYER TODAY to not progranate it, Most of the time the lawyers work on a contingency basis so it will not cost you.

But for Gods sake dont take Zyprexa !

Yes I do have a Lawsuite filed in my State..

    Have a great Day

I was hospitalized last September 2003 with blood clots. I had recently before that been diagnoised with Lupus. I had never had any history of mental illness or the like. But while I was hospitalized the doctor began giving me Zyprexa (”To help me sleep”?). This was my medical doctor and I never spoke with a Psychologist or anyone who could evaluate my mental status. While in the hospital (for 3 weeks) I began to see strange things when I would shut my eyes. Anyway, to make a long story short. Once I got out of the hospital and found out what the drug was for. I stopped taking it cold turkey although I later found out that that was not the way to stop taking it. I was on it for about one month total. I had my gallbladder removed two weeks after I got out of the hospital because I had sludge that was blocking my bile duct. About 2 to 3 months later I was diagnoised with Pancreatitis. I have had a few flare-ups beginning February 2004. Please let me know if the Zyprexa may have caused this. I “Do Not” drink or smoke and I used to work out and lead a healthy life style. I just turned 30 and still am dealing with the pain and inflammation of the pancreatitis diagnosis. Not to mention that my memory and thought process is not as clear and precise as before. Can taking a mental product such as Zyprexa cause lack of memory and such? Please help.

And the power of the information available via internet!

My name is ricki, I was on Clozaril from 91-94, max doses.. upwards of 400 mg a day. I began having severe abdominal pain in Dec of 94, was inpatient in a VA hospital for over 4 months as they told me this was all psycosomatic and all kinds of torterous nonsense… I left AMA, and within a few months was diagnosed with Recurrant Acute Pancreatitus and fitted with an intrathecal Morphine Implant… Suffering with this desease now for 10 solid years, I have NEVER been afforded an explanation of WHY it happened… I involved myself with experimentation of substances throughout my early adulthood, but never tipped a bottle… EVER. So– Anyhow, in 98, another doctor decided that I would benifit from Zyprexa… After a month on that, I began having MONTHLY episodes of acute pancreatitus, needing constant admissions to the hospital for pain control, hydration and the like. I now, mainly just suffer at home and wait to die.

All of this information is extremely interesting, and if there is anyone who would care to pen pal and possibly be a strength to me, offer opinions, advice or hope, my health is miserable, and it sure would be nice to get down and dirty and figure out if there is a major company out there holding some culpability.

I currently recieve 26 mg of morphine daily, directly into my spinal cavity just to keep pain levels at 5-3. The attorney I wrote from a board that had info on Clozaril was not interested, and I just havn’t the strength to start at the A’s in the yellow pages and get thru B… The Zyprexa info from the commericals I have been seeing, I called, and they are sending me a packet, but I rrrrrealllly believe that it was the Cloz that began it all… Thank you all for your shared wisdom, and I wish everyone a happy and healthfilled day.

I have auditory Processing disability. Which deals with memory. I have a short term memory. I have been on several medications and i am wondering about misdignosis. I was on zeprexa and it causes weight gain and it caused me to become bulemic. I had dealt with anorexia in the past. It heightend reality or something. I can not explain. My impulses got worse and I started smoking. I never smoked in my life until then. I can not remeber anything anymore. I have no short term memory or really anything. I have just become stupid. I do not know if it is part of all the drugs I have been on or what. I kind of wish that doctors could be a little more careful giving out medicine. That stuff is really powerful stuff. I also have chronic immune problems so now my body is a old body at 26. My allergist said that a lot of the anti depressants cause the body to be broken down. I do not know who to believe anymore. I feel like being on medication has only made me more sick and slow and dull. If you have any ideas please let me know. I have a lot of health problems. My chest hurts now all the time now. I feel like someone is stepping on my chest half the time. I can not remeber anything anymore.

I have been taking “MEDS” since I quit drikng in 1995, November 9. In three months I was taken to the Hopital. While there they ran test, including cat scan and MRI.. I was diagnosd with Bipolar disorder, given Lithium and sent home. I was prescribed 1000mg a day. All I did was sleep. I got out by going AMA and came home and slept some more. My routine waould be bed by 10 pm. Up at 9am and have coffee and breakfast. Then I would lay on the couch, napping because I had no energy, my metal function was impaired while taking it, I coudn’t do the things I usd to do in my head with numbers, I even had trouble using a pencil and paper. I went to the local doc and he recommended highr doses. I started taking lower doses until I could function, which was at 250 mg per day. I took that into the middle of August and got sick. First just hiccups for three days. Went to doc suggesteed Lithium as cause and was informeded that I neede to take more. Well I continued on at 250mg but after two more days I stopped taking it. I felt much better very soon. I went to another docter and was put on Depokate(Valpuric Acid) and took that along with endocet and xanax. Now another doc is seeimg me, and thinks I don’t need so much pain medication or as much xaxnax. He wants me to take Zyprexza and so I did. It wasn’t long before I began to feel different. I felt sluggish and slow thinking. I think I should not take this, is ther anyone who has good reason for me to take it. It makes my lips munb and typing difficult, and it makes me slur my speech.

Cleland Galley’s story caught my eye as it sounded almost identical to mine. I started on med’s when in my early teens & through the yrs my phs. Increased the doses-added more, switched others-I felt like a guinea pig-and a menal zombie. I too diagnosed bi-polar (like everyone) on a smorgasbord of meds eventually incl: Zyprexa for some time, which cause me to be very violent and angry , I probably could of killed someone on it, as I did abuse animals when taking it that is not who I am! (switching from Risbridal-which caused a hormonal imbalance-my breasts to produce milk in my teans)-Paxel (which started my excessive weigt gain)–welbutrin-zoloft & OF COURSE, Lithium. I stayed medicated for over 5 yrs. Just before my twenties I had a break down, lost track of which meds to take-which I had taken- I GAVE UP and through all of them in the trash. A mo or so after I felt “funny” -desensitized. Then as the summer came and my mind cleared I felt good again. I told my phys. and he said “Maybe I missed diagnosed you” (!!!!) -till this day I regret not filing a law suit-FIVE years of Hell on medication. That was 4 yrs ago and I’ve never felt better and more confident in my life-my mind is strong-I still have bad day (like anyone out there) but I stay strong and keep myself in control. –I know not everyone is alike –and some may need it-Although I truly believe Most are over medicated, could use therapy instead-Be Careful-Trust your own judgment!! Dumping the Meds was the best decision of MY life!
