in Baycol

A Mississippi jury cleared Bayer, the German drug company, of liability in a $156,000 lawsuit filed by an 83-year-old man claiming muscle weakness from taking the anti-cholesterol drug Baycol. The lawsuit, filed by Billy G. Slaughter of Laurel, said Baycol “drug carried an unreasonably dangerous risk for severe muscle injury and death,” reported The Clarion Ledger.

Bayer pulled Baycol off the market after reports of sometimes fatal rhabdomyolysis, a sever muscle adverse reaction from this cholesterol-lowering drug. The Food and Drug Administration linked Baycol to more than 50 deaths worldwide before it was recalled. The number of deaths linked to Baycol has since increased to more than 100.
