Pfizer Prepares for Possible Rezulin and Neurontin Settlements

January 23rd, 2004 · 48 Comments

Pfizer, the world’s largest drug maker, took one-time charges totaling $1.5 billion to forth-quarter earnings to cover resolution of two pending Warner-Lambert legal matters: Rezulin personal-injury claims and various governmental investigations of marketing practices related to Neurontin.

The first charge, for $955 million, is expected to be sufficient to cover all known personal-injury claims arising from the use of the Warner-Lambert diabetes medicine Rezulin, which was withdrawn from the market in March 2000, Pfizer said in a news release posted at (www.pfizer.com). The company is taking the charge in connection with reaching agreements under which the cases and claims of approximately 35,000 individuals will be settled or withdrawn.

“After nearly four years of litigation, we are putting the vast majority of personal-injury claims behind us and sharply reducing the scale, expense, and risk of this legacy matter,” said Jeffrey Kindler, senior vice president and general counsel.

In addition, Pfizer said it is also taking a charge of $403 million in connection with the previously reported investigations by the U.S. Attorney’s office in Boston, as well as various state authorities, into Warner-Lambert’s promotion of Neurontin prior to Pfizer’s acquisition of Warner-Lambert in 2000.

“We are attempting to resolve these matters through settlement, and discussions have recently advanced to the point where it is appropriate to take a provision that we believe will be sufficient to resolve all outstanding federal and state governmental investigations related to Neurontin,” Pfizer said.

The company said it believes that the one-time charge of $403 million will be sufficient to resolve all outstanding federal and state governmental investigations related to Neurontin as well as the pending civil whistle-blower lawsuit brought by former Warner-Lambert employee Dr. David P. Franklin.

My doctor just prescribed Neurontin for back and leg pain. My son told me he heard on tv that it can cause cancer, is this true? I take 300mg 3 times a day.

I started taking neurotin a few years back.I started to take it for neck pain and burning in the back of my neck.Ever since I started taking it ,it worked pretty good, but then I put on lots of weight and headaches ,hives and severe depression. My husband and I where building a new home and I could not understand why I was so depressed and no energy .I did not think I would be here on earth long enough to live there and I AM 52YRS. old.I SHOULD OF FELT EXCITMENT,HAPPINESS AND A FEELING OF A NEW LIFE,but I felt like I would not be here alot ,I was so depressed, and very, very LOW energy stopped commuticating with friends that I HAVE HAD SINCE HIGH SCHOOL,CLOSE FRIENDS THEY DIDNT UNDERSTAND AND NOR DID I????Then the hives kept coming back and the unexplained pain, the depression got real bad.I had to stop the neurotin and it had to be right away the hives were bad and the other symtons were too.It was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life,it was horrible to many things happened during this time period of getting off the drug or [poison].THAT IS HOW I FEEL NOW. My life is changing little by little but I know I will make it NOW. I have been married for 33 yrs.and very happy till I started this poison[neurotin],now it is getting better and we are happy again,no more crying allday for no reason, the after effects are getting a little better and I am happier now ,but how long will my body pay for what I have done to it,by taking the neurotin? Will I ever be like I WAS BEFORE TAKING IT? It is really hard !!!!!I am glad for stopping it when I did.I may of not been here now to enjoy my husband and my kids and grandkids and my new home. I HOPE THE COMPANY OF THIS DRUG PAYS DEARLY OR LET THEM TAKE IT[NEUROTIN] FOR AWHILE AND SEE AND FEEL THE EFFECTS OF WHAT THEY HAVE DONE, TO SO MANY OF US OUT THERE. GOD BLESS ALL OF U THAT ARE IN THE SAME BOAT, my thoughts and prayers ARE WITH U ALL, a survivor Vicki C.

i took Neurontin for diabetic neuropathy. It did not seem to do any good for me. i wonder if i should join a class action suit against Pfizer on this?

i was on neurontin for 3 years, 700 mg 3 times a day for bi polar disorder. at first all it did was make me sick but i was 15 and i figured “hey, if i feel like crap it must be working” i was tired all the time, while i was on it i took 25 of them in attempts to kill myself after a fight with my mother about her taking my cigarrettes. i was messed up before i started taking neurontin but it wasn’t till after i started it that i tried to take my life, but i’m sure that’s only a coincidence…right? it seems that the neurontin only made a bad thing worse. after i saw a report on the news about the misuse of neutontin i started taking trileptol and a week later i stopped having to take three neps a day, it was a miracle.

What are the other side effects of Neurontin besides depression?

  • susan sheldon // Apr 30, 2004 at 5:24 pm

my son age 17 was diagnosed bipolar 2 years ago. the dr put him on neurontin and this suicidal teen who was cutting his arms with blades, doing every drug you could imagine and flunking out of school did a total turn around. he stopped the drugs, did every extra thing he could then was up for validectorian this year.

in jan he was feeling so good he stopped the neurontin totatlly and all

at once. He rode a manic wave for about a month, then started doing bad in school. all of a sudden seizures started

once a week, totally knocking him into unconciouness for 2-3 hours. 4 seizures a week apart in march, and 17 in the month of april. we did MRI, 2 EEGs and 4 CAT scans and they all came out normal. they now say the seizures are NOT seizures but nonepeleptic episodes and they have him back on the nuerontin. He did wonderful on the drug.. but did it cause all these other things? and now he is in trouble with the law and was doing drugs again. I liked the success that nuerontin did… but i am worried if putting him back on will make him worse! help! email me if you have any answers!

I was taking neurontin since Dec 04 when my doctor prescribed it. I was having migranes and neck pain and was at my wits end. I had an MRI which showed narrowing of my spinal cord which was causing the migranes. I diligently took my pills and headed off to physical therapy. After 10 visits to therapy my neck pain was 10 times worse and the migranes indescribable. My doc increased the neurontin but nothing was getting better. I was feeling worse and worse and what once was a very active mommy, wife, friend and worker, I became tired all the time, unmotivated and distant to everyone. I thought it was just a lack of good sleep-maybe the muscal relaxer or the neurontin, my body just needed time to adjust-it would pass. I would wake up in the morning, click on the news and have to just listen to it because the whole room was wobbling. After 20min of lying there trying to focus, closing my eyes concentrating, opening them again the earthquake of my vision would pass and I could stumble out of bed to get my kids off to school. I had enough, and quit taking everything except for pain medication when that got too much to handle. My problem now is I am so dissy every time I turn my head, adjust my position or anything that all I do is make it about 20 feet before I have to sit and catch my breath and wait for things to stop spinning. The pain meds are unnecessary because I have been immobilized. As I sit here my eyes flutter, my hands shake and I bite back tears of fear that I will never be the same fun loving person I once was. What is to become of us?

Last year on April,my wife Mirela, complained for back pain.We went to hospital ER,many times but nothing came. She did cat scans,MIR,x-rays etc.She was a happy person before. She was happy because we reunited again after two years away, she found a job at MEEI ,but the situation become worse since she started taking different drugs ,especially when she started taking neurontin. Her personality changed, she started to talk about graves and funerals, she was angry’wanted to stay lonely and in darkness, and tried manny times to kill herself,to drown in the river or to jump under the big truck on the street. This suidical behavior freaked me out.I didn’t know what to do,so i left my job(she left her job too),because I was afraid to leave her alone, especially because she and my son Semi ,they had only a couple of months in US.Sometimes the dose of neurontin she used to take was killing;three tablets of 300 mg three times a day, altogether 2700mg.She was out of her mind and her life became a hell.By the end of August,5 months after beeing day and nights at different hospitals and privat psychoiatrists, she got diagnosed with leukemia. This was the end for us.Our life turned upside down.I,a very healthy person, for the first time found out i have high blood pressure (this because I started heavig severe headache on the back of my head)and deep depression. But here we are not talking about me and my son,who is not the same anymore,we are talking about my wife. After a great job in MASS GENERAL Ellisson 14,Bigelow 12, she had a great improvement about leukemia(people working in these pavions are the braveist we have ever seen and they have all our love)but talking about my wife, she is still living her nightmare in deep depression caused from all those painkillers and it’s not a coincidence, all this story started when she started taking NEURONTIN.

I was first treated for BP disorder in 1991 with Depakote, but after about 6 months was switched to Neurontin. I was on it for years. It was a constant struggle to keep my head above water. I was constantly thinking of ways to kill myself, constantly in a state of tears and the pdoc’s only solution was to increase the Neurontin - trying to improve my depression. The physician’s only know what they’ve read, studied, and been advised. I want SOMEONE to tell me how this shit keeps happening. Who in the hell is in charge of monitoring these big companies like Pfizer, because if it were you or me, we would have been fired, hung and shot at sunrise a long time ago. To make them pay, what comes out to be a small amount of money to them, is NOTHING. It is not a punishment. What about the victims…and who is going to PROMISE us that this will not happen AGAIN? I INSIST on a reply, not a monetary stipend, or a form letter stamped with some BS signature.

My doctor prescribed Neurontin for the terrible burning in my legs. He said that they were finding it helped people with fibromyalgia and I should try it. I have only been able to take 900mg. a day - otherwise I am so dizzy and clumsy. The burning in the legs was better for several months but now, after several years, it is continuing getting worse. Any one else have this problem?

At the age of 24 I suffered a Stroke and eventually I began to have seizures and was put on neurontin to combat the seizure. After a few years of taken the medicine my wife and family began to notice that I was not responding sometimes when people were speaking to me and my speech patterns was noticable decreasing with slurring in my speech. We spoke with my neurologist about my hearing. I was tested and a very noticeable decline was present. He recommended that I had to go to a hearing specialist and get tested. I was tested and fitted for aids. Along with the hearing loss came titinus. I have been off the neurotin for a couple of years. I will probable (according to the hearing specialist)have to wear aids for the rest of my life to combat the sometimes deafening titinus and decline in hearing. My doctor did not know if the neurontin(at that time)was causing my depression or was it due to having a stroke at such an early age.

I have been taking neurontin for almost 3 yrs. I am having some serious depression. I was put on for my back pain and nerve pain in my leg. It really didn’t work so well, after several trips to the doctor i was on over 2000 mg. a day mostly at night. I am having serious depression and mood swings. I am now bed ridden on count of my back. So the med. didn’t help with my depression. So i have been having thoughts of death and went as far as looking for urns. Then started scanning songs to be played at my on funeral. I am now on effoxer xr and wellbutrin. I am taking 375mg. of effoxer the max you can go. My life is hell now. The drug Neurontin has just made things worst. I would like to know some lawyers that would be able to come to my house and an update on the case. Thank you for reading and listening to my life.

Four years ago I was presribed nuerontin for bipolar disorder.Since then, my health has greatly deteriorated. Two and a half years ago, I had my gall bladder removed, although there were no stones found on the ultrasound. When the Dr. got in to my abdomen, he found adhesions that had grown from my liver to my diaphram, which explained the extreme pain I was in.Now, two and a half years later, I am having the same, but worse symptons as I had before. Now the ultasound shows an enlarged liver. It literally sticks out my side, showing a large lump in my side near the ribs.I now need to have a liver biopsy and all the adhesions removed again, more surgery.I also have been diagnosed with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.I do not belive I have either of these.I believe the neurontin has caused me to have a sick liver and some kidney problems.I will know more after my biopsy.Four years of my life have been taken away, and for what?I am now on SSI and have no life. The only time I feel good is when I am manic.Neurontin was never approved by the FDA for bipolar.Infact, the studies that were done showed that placebos worked just as well if not BETTER than neurontin. This was an artical that USA today brought out.How do I get legal advise?Whom sould I contact first?

I was put on Neurontin in January of 2004 for neuropathy in my feet, legs, hands, arms, they say is from my Diabetes, event though it began before I was diagnosed with it. The Neurontin has helped about 20% maybe with the pain but I began to cry a lot and become mentally confused. About a month ago I had a “zone out” in the parking lot of the grocery store I go to. I lost about 10 minutes of time but one of the workers collecting shopping carts said I was seemingly awake and sitting up. I had evidently sensed I was in trouble and had dumped my purse out on the seat to try to get to my cell phone. My doctor had an EEG done but this came out normal. I am extremely fatigued, have crying spells for the first time in my life and am “in a fog” a lot now. While it is supposed to take years for any kidney damage from diabetes, I have begun to show signs of this happening and feel it must be the Neurontin that has caused these sudden unexplained symptoms and signs of kidney damage. I saw an ad on TV for Neurontin claims and called these attorneys but they only take cases where seizures are involved. My doctor insists I keep taking it as so far it is the only thing that has helped my pain.

I have been on neurontin for about three years now for burning leg pain. since I have become depressed have had blurred vision and severe headaches. I have also attempted suicide. I feel that these fraudulat drugg pusher should be held accoutable for the problems that we all have suffered at the hands of these drug pusher of Neurontin. I fee; that we are intitled to monetary damages for the undue stress and pain that they have put us through!!

I been seen by Drs. in MN and OH for the combination of things that I have going on. they telling me that there isnt any thing that will cure me of everything. I was diagnosed with chronic lower intestinal pain and was referred to a pain clinic. at that time they prescribed neurontin. Since then i have experienced extreme fatigue, depression and suicidal tendencies, mood swings and severe headaches and short term memory loss (will repeat myself in conversations). I rarely leave the house due to anxiety and fear. I sleep 12 to 14 hours a day.I have lost my job and quality of life and don’t know if i will ever get it back. I am currently weaning off neurontin with my doctors assistance. I have never experienced these feelings before taking this medication.

I insisted my father go to the doctor. His knee hurt from an old injury he got while serving in the Marines. The Dr. prescribed Neurontin. A few weeks into taking it he was having trouble walking and began using crutches. After about a month of crutches he became unable to walk at all. Everyday I saw the pain and confusion in his eyes as his pride was taken away. I noticed he had been sleeping alot more than usual but he was’nt one to talk about things that were bothering him. At about 1:00am on October 14, 2004 I heard a gunshot. I went downstairs to see, and could’nt find my dad. I looked around the house and finally found him outside in the cold in his new wheelchair. He used that wheelchair one time. To roll himself outside and shoot himself in the head. When I got to him the blood was still pouring out and hitting the ground. a sound that I will never get out of my head. The sun in my familys universe was gone. Since then I have had to hospitalize my 13 year old daughter 2 times for “cutting”. My 14 year old straight “A” happy girl, is a lost, angry, failing mess! Our lives have been destroyed! Those pompous, corporate @$#&*@@ at Pfizer are nothing but murderers! Would somebody please tell me how in hell Neurontin is still on the market?????!!!!

I and my son have taken nerotin. I took it for dieabetic neropthay, as well as I was on Rezulin I am wondering what the long term effects of these meds are. I have problem with balance, leg weekness as well as confusion. I understand this could be related to my sugar, but feel most of these systems started after I was on the medication. My son took it for seizure disorder. He was on it for several years, he was around 3 years old and he complianed of sudden onset headaches and blurred vision, when I questioned his DR’s about this they all stated once his medication leveled off he would be fine. I found him to become very confused, he would just sit in front of the refigerator and cry for a drink eventhought he knew how to get one.( I could not figure out why)I had his hearing tested nothing wrong. He was so mean at times he bit the child next door to the bone. He complained about pain when walking and weakness in his legs . He complained about shoulder pain. (No medical resons could be found.) After several year the seizures became worse he would have tremmor on a daily basics. FINALLY his DR took him off the med and put him on zerton ( not sure of spelling) he did not do well on that either so put him on depakote he had more negtive reaction to this med. The last medication he was put on was tegrol which seem to be working for him. My question is what is the long term effective of this medication on young children all the statement I have read deal with adults. My son still complain of leg pain and weakness and no one seem to know why. PS the blurred vision, shoulder pain, mean and confused behaviors subsided shortly after the dicontiuation of nerotin, however his leg still seem to be a problem as is mine. This bring the question of long term effects.

PS: they recalled resulin however my drug store still gave it to me for six months after that and my insurance paid for it HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN?

I am a 51-year-old woman who has been on Neuontin since 12/04 for neuropathic pain due to Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy and Fybromyalgia. These diagnoses are tenuous at best. I hve since experienced dizziness, increased shortness of breath at times ( I have asthma predating the onset of RSD), constipation, memory loss, speech disfluency, and numbness in my hands which maybe due either to the Neurontin or to the RSD. I had no idea when I was put on this Rx that there was any controversy about it. I currently take 1300 mgs./day, plus Ultram and Amytriptiline (sp?) for the RSD/Fibro symptoms, on top of meds for GERD. I am currently not having the horrible nerve pain while on these meds, and am sleeping thru the night for the first time in years, but after seeing the other blogs here I am wondering at what cost?

May be helpful, from another post:

I have indeed found a lawyer, but he only handles cases that involve suicidal deaths from the medications or suicide attempts. He is in NJ and has over 200 clients, half of which are families of dead loved ones.

i was placed on neurontin about three years ago by a doctor i was referred to because she was an expert in straightening out patients who were on numerous medicines that were conflicting and causing adverse reactions. after about three months on neurontin one night i leeped out of bed and ran across the room in my sleep and inpalled myself on a coat tree with 9″ hooks on it.the hook tore my left cheekbone before it entered into my left eye. at this point i woke up with the hook inbedded deep in my eye and stuck there. after yelling for my wife iwas able to yank the coat tree from my eye but as i pulled it out i tore up the whole left side of my nose. being 0n coumadin i was bleeding profusely from my left cheek, nose and eye. when i ran to the bathroom to check out the damage i couldn’t see my eye in the mirror so i told my wife to try and find my eye on the floor. unable to find my eye she drove me to the hospital. after emergency surgery i was told my eye was still in my socket but that i seriously damaged it by deflatting the globe. i also damaged my sinuses by the hook entering through the eye ball all the way into my sinuses. i had to be treated by a plastic surgeon for my cheek and badly damaged nose. i have under gone six eye surgeries but unfortunetly i can’t see anything out of my left eye. who do i blame for this accident? WAS IT AN ACCIDENT? DID THE DOCTOR THAT PUT ME ON NEURONTIN KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DRUG OR WAS SHE SOLD BILL OF GOODS ON NEURONTIN? DID SHE GET EXTRA MONEY FROM THE DRUG CO. TO PUSH NEURONTIN? ALL I KNOW IS I’M THE INJURED PERSON. WHO DO I GO TO TO GET MY SIGHT BACK? WHO HAS TO PUT 14 DROPS IN MY EYE EVERY DAY SO AS TO MINIMIZE THE PAIN AND ALLOW ME TO NOT HAVE MY EYE SURGICALLY REMOVED? BEFORE I TOOK NEURONTIN I HAD SIGHT IN MY LEFT EYE, MY FACE WAS NOT SCARRED AND PEOPLE DID NOT STARE AT MY GROSSLY DISCOLORED LEFT EYE.BEFORE I TOOK NEURONTIN I DID NOT WALK IN MY SLEEP AND CERTAINLY DID NOT RUN IN MY SLEEP.SINCE I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED NEURONTIN AFTER MY ACCIDENT I HAVE NOT WALKED IN MY SLEEP NOR HAVE I RAN IN MY SLEEP. WHO CAN HELP ME GET TO THE RIGHT ATTORNEY? WHO KNOWS OF ANYBODY WITH THE SAME TYPE OF ACCIDENT WHILE ON NEURONTIN.? E-MAIL ME. THANK YOU

I have been on this damn stuff since Oct. of 2000. My doctor put me on it to help with my diabetic neuropathy and my health has done nothing but go down hill since then. I’m a police officer and it has really affected my job performance. I’m tired all the time, I have horrible memory loss, In Jan of 03 I had to have almost all of my teeth removed because they were just breaking off and I’ve never had teeth problems. I have gastric freeze which only allows me to eat one meal a day. (not good for a diabetic) I can only sleep about 5 hours a day and I’m back up again… Suicide thoughts every once in a while that just come out of nowhere. The list goes on and on….but the worse part of it all is that I’m only 31 years old!!!! I feel like I’m about 70 (no offense to any older people whom might read this) My best friend is a lawyer and she is going to handle my case. Screw that class action stuff, I’m going after them om my own!!! And good luck the everyone out there.

my stepdad has went damn near crazy from this medication (neurontin)he has attempted suicide and has even made me have to call the law in fear he was going to kill my mother due to his dillusional thinking she was having an affair with his friend.as i started learning over everyone else’s stories i started to realize how serious his problem was and how 27,000 people have actually killed themselves from this crap. his side effects were so bad he was seeing and hearing things that werent there he couldn’t even remember where he would be going just walking thru the house. he had terrifying outbursts of anger fits of rage and feeling of such low self worth he didn’t wanna live anymore he suffered terrible backpain severe headaches shaking of his hands confusion 80% of the time he was not my stepdad but became a ticking timebomb waiting to explode every nite i wondered if my mom was gonna make it thru the night not only was she on the way to a nervous breakdown but she as well feared for her safety, waking up to having him cutting of locks of her hair or the scissors to her neck. ( their bedroom had become an auxilary of weapons (swords and guns) about 60 in all )after i relized my stepdad was suffering severly and his side effects were driving him insane i rushed all these papers of everyone else’s stories over to my mom’s and began to go over them with her she was so happy to relize my stepdad wasn’t crazy and if was taken off this crap she would have that sweet man she married back we began to explain to him all this pain he was having (he was almost crippled) he walked like he was 80 all due to neurontin and that he wasn’t losing his mind but just dealing with side effects due to the fact he was taking it for neuropathy and it was never even approved for it .that’s what i want to know how can they legally prescribe it to people? they were using my stepdad and many others as a guinea pig and the people i care most about almost had to die! i am so angry how do we find a lawyer in florida .?the good news is my stepdad took hiself off hiself two days ago i am worried now how his outcome will be even though i seen him as “almost hiself” today i am very proud of him and i pray for all the families suffering i want justice i just need a little support and suggestions thank you for listening please email me with any help i think the main thing is to go to whoever is suffering from this and reassure them of their sanity and help them by other stories that deep down inside they are still themselves and how hopeful their future will be and help them get off it however they can .it is working for us so far it made me so happy to say look at all these other people’s stories your not going insane (they really feel they are)your gonna be ok

Please be aware of all side effects after taking Neurontin. My 80 yr. father had taken neurontin for over two yr’s when he committed suicide on 4/18/2003. He took his service revolver and shot thru his head. He had deep depression, severe mood swings, would fall all over the house when on this medication. He had to have his kidney removed for cancer on 5/09/ 2002. I fully believe it was due to the neurontin also. It’s a horrible drug and I wish the makers of it had to go to the funeral of the families and see the hurt they have caused. No amount of money can bring back my best friend, and my wonderful father.

i was on Neurontin since the 2002. I had a stroke and one of the drugs to help me with the pain was supposedly Neurontin. I noticed my hair was falling out, so much so you’d think I was on radiation. It really started to fall out in late 2003. I had my primary and my rehab doctor both tell me is was something like stress or Iron. I took some Iron supplements for 6 months. It didn’t do anything at all. My hair was still falling out. One by one I got rid of all the drugs that were in my system that I felt were not doing anything to me. That left me with the Neurontin. Through my own initiave I looked into the Neurontin side affects. There it was all along. I also noticed I had other side affects I felt were the result of the stroke like the feeling of off-balanced, light headedness, dizziness and anger.

But it turns out this was all because of the Neurontin I was taking. I have since taken myself off of it
