The U.S. House of Representatives approved the so-called “cheeseburger bill” that prevents Americans from suing the food industry for making them overweight.

The “Personal Responsibility in Food Consumption Act” would require courts to dismiss certain lawsuits filed against manufacturers and sellers of any food product as well as the trade associations that represent them. The bill would affect lawsuits seeking damages for injury resulting from weight gain, obesity, or any health condition associated with obesity as a result of consumption of these products.

The bill now goes to the Senate where its future is uncertain.

“This issue isn’t about any one restaurant or any particular food, it’s all about personal responsibility and individual decisions,” Lisa Howard, a spokeswoman for McDonald Corp., said in a prepared statement.
