RIAA Sues 532 Music Traders, Including 89 on University Campuses

March 24th, 2004 · 1 Comment

The Recording Industry Association of America said it has filed a new round of lawsuits against 532 people for allegedly trading copyright music, including 89 on university campuses.

This latest round of lawsuits marks the first time the RIAA’s war against online piracy targets college students. Until yesterday, the trade group had not filed any lawsuits against people swapping copyright music on university networks.

Including yesterday’s lawsuits, almost 2000 people have now been sued for allegedly trading copyright music on peer-to-peer networks like Kazaa by the recording industry.

The RIAA does not know the names of the people they are suing, yet. But they do have their IP addresses’.

With the “John Doe” lawsuits filed yesterday, the RIAA will be able to subpoena the providers of Internet service and force them to disclose the names of the defendants.

I need advice-my friend was sued for downloading music. She freaked and signed an agreement to pay the $4,000. Only now she can’t come up with it and the due date is in 2 days. Is there any way she can get out of it? Lawyers are so expensive!!!
