Zyprexa Lawsuits to be Unified in New York

in Zyprexa

Zyprexa Lawsuits against Eli Lilly and Co. over its blockbuster drug are headed to court in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Lilly’s request to consolidate a growing number of Zyprexa cases in Indiana was denied by a judicial panel on multidistrict litigation in April.

“Obviously we don’t like going to the defendant’s home state” to try the Zyprexa cases, said Mark Burton, a trial attorney for Hersh & Hersh in San Francisco that’s handling several cases against Lilly. “They have a lot of political influence there.”

Lilly requested the consolidation of about 24 federal cases around the country, plus future cases. The consolidation will save both Lilly and the federal court system time and money during the pretrial phases.

Zyprexa, which is on pace to generate more than $4 billion in sales this year, is approved for the treatment of schizophrenia and manic depression.

The lawsuits were filed on behalf of patients on Zyprexa who claim they experienced serious side effects from taking the drug, including diabetic conditions.

I was prescreibed Zyprexa about 4 years ago by Dr. Felix German. I was suffering from depression. My diabetes was detected about 1 year later. I am no longer on the medication and now my diabetes is under control just by my diet. I also experienced heart problems and weight gain all attributed to the Zypreza. Please contact me and let me know how I can participate in this law suit.

I recently just heard of this drug causing problems. I am actually interested if anyone had a similar experience as of my mother. She went into a local hospital lucg infection they put her on predisone and zyprexa, she went off predisone and the next day basically lost her mind hallucinating etc. We then took her back to the hospital (a different one) she started haveing seizures. One doctor indicated the dose of predisone was to high and she was dropped quickly. Once she came out of this spell we had to restart predisone and wean her off. Zyprexa 5 mg was still being given which she did not like as she said it made her too groggy and when she woke up it took her about 10 mins to remember where she was. She then developed pains and ended up having her gall bladder removed. We saw another doctor who did say that her pyscotic episodes caused by dose of predisone. She came home on her heart medicine no predisone still on zyprexa 5 mg. She cme home May 10 her granddaughter’s birthday. The day after mother’s day she was gone.

I was started on 10mg of zyprexa some three years ago and was removed from it two months ago, when my doctor admitted that it was destroying mu health. Four years ago, I was diagnosed with slightly elevated glucose level and as a result I was placed on 2.5mg of glyburide. About a year later I was put on 10mg of zyprexa and soon I began to manifest uncontrolled levels of glucose and I gained some 25lbs. Initially the glyburide was increased to 5mg twice a day. This failed to lower glucose levels so 500mg of metformin twice a day was added. Some four months later I was placed on 25units of insulin twice a day in addition to the aforementioned pills. About six to eight months later, I was placed on 40 units of 70/30 insulin twice a day because my sugar level was unmanageable on regular insulin. Then my medical doctor stated that my triglycite level exceeded 1000 and she feared I would succumb to pancreatic cancer. She strongly advised me to inform my psychiatrist that zyprexa was not a drug of choice for me because it was debilitating my healt. Consequently my doctor removed me from zyprexa and the glucose level has improved but the damage is done for I started on just 2.5mg of glyburide. Is there anything I can do to right this wrong?

BEWARE…ZYPREXA CAUSES PSYCHOSIS TO WORSEN!!

My son was given Zyprexa when he was first diagonosed with schizoaffective disorder. He was still experiencing hallucinations therefore his doctor increased his dose. He STILL had hallucinations so the doctor raised the dose as recommended by Eli Lilly insert and my son, who is a normally sweet and gentle person attacked and stabbed me with a knife. He was so psychotic he was hearing voices and seeing people that were not there. He heard voices telling him he had to stab me in the neck and kill me. Thank goodness my husband was home and was able to subdue my son. The outcome could have been worse.

The grand jury no billed my son stating that Zyprexa was the cause of the increased schizophrenic reaction and therefore did not find him responsible.

Because of this incident, it has been a horrific time between my son and myself. I have fear of him and to this day find myself uneasy at times. He carries a tremendous amount of guilt which frequently causes him pain, even though he has been told that Zyprexa caused this reaction.

The number one and only frequent adverse neurological side effectlisted in the Eli Lilly insert is schizophrenic reaction. However, this was just indicated in 2000 and according to his doctor, was not brought to his attention by Eli Lilly’s pharmaceutical representative.

kim andre,

I was wondering if i could get your email. My daughter is 14 and has experienced a similar situation. They then put her on more drugs saying that she was bipolar. I don’t think she really has a mental disorder and the drugs are causing the problem.Any other posts would be appreciated.

Well its been 3 years since I have started this suite and would you believe the defendents ie: Eli Lily and the Doctor have not even been served. The case is filed but just sitting there collecting dust. While I am dying from complications of diabetes cuased by indegestion of Zyprexa.

There is been NO UP-DATES on any board about this supposed litigation, no comments from those who started this site.

I often wonder just who is for who here. There is NO excuse for the time lapse. If any of you do have suites filed dont count on anything.

I’ve been on Zyprexa twice for periods of 8 months since I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2000. It did effectively treat the manic episodes but now I am having Glucose Tolerance Testing performed because a recent bloodtest showed a higher than normal glucose level; I am 22 years old. With Zyprexa, I gained 30 pounds both occassions and eventually lost the weight and returned back to 115-120 after stopping the medication – one time on my own. I am 5′3′ and weigh 117 today and I better not have to take any more pills (like glyburide to treat elevated glucose levels) than the crazy amount I am already taking at the age of 22! I am about to lose my health insurance coverage from my parents and I can’t pay $600 a month for all this stuff and I don’t know which insurance company will take me!

I took Zyprexa and Prozac for a few months for bipolar disorder. I quit taking it all because I don’t have the money, but although that was several months ago, I still experience the side-effects: low appetite, low metabolism, low body heat, pathetic libido, reduced creativity. Interestingly, I have not experienced any bipolar symptoms since going off.

In 2000, my first visit w/ a Psych. included an RX of Zyprexa. Something about me being a child of the 60’s and he said all of us experimented with drugs back then that caused our sub-conscious barrier to fall down leading to delusions. I had been on it for exactly 8 days when my heart went into Ventricular tachycardia which lasted 2 weeks and ended up with me receiving an implanted cardio pacemaker/defibrillator. Since at the time of admission my list of medications included both Zyprexa AND Vioxx, I have some ill feelings about both of them and the surgeries to change the battery in pacemaker/defibrilator that I will have to have the rest of my life!!!! I don’t know if either caused it but seems real strange to me…I was 48 at the time.

my stupid dr. at hutchings psychiatric center got a court order forcing me to take zyprexa 20mg/day. i took it for 7 months and it did not relieve my schizoaffective disorder. since the treatment was so bad at hpc i faked being sane just to get out of the hospital. so the day after i got out i stopped taking zyprexa. well it wasn’t long before i ended up in th hospital again and another court order to take zyprexa again. i’m not sure of the exact circumstances of all this because zyprexa brain washes you, i forgot just about everything that happened over the four years i was on zyprexa. then in 2001 i started having symptoms of diabetes. i gained 80lbs. and was a zombie while being forced to take zyprexa or be imprisoned at hpc. did you know it is illegal to be insane in new york state. they call hpc a hospital but it is just a prison for the mentally ill. now i am suing eli lilly for many dollars… if you want a reputable attorney that will accept and litigate your zyprexa case please call the douglas and london law firm in nyc at 1-212-566-7500 and ask for mike london. please tell him you were referred by mike gentile. oh yeah i also had a heart attack do to the high cholesterol symptom/side effect of zyprexa. i do not like doctors or eli lilly let’s screw them.

I have gained over 100 lbs on zyprexa and other so-called atypical antiphycotics that I can’t get rid of without going off all the drugs; anybody else?

15 Jeremy Yates June 14, 2005 at 8:22 am

I think that as a punitive measure, should we (mental health consumers) win this case, is have the Court rule to allow us to take or NOT take psych meds voluntarilly because of their volatility; mental illness should not be a death sentence!!!

16 R.C. June 28, 2005 at 3:02 pm

I’ve also contracted diabetes through taking ZYPREXA and Iv’e gain 801bs.Just find you a lawyer that deals with suing pharmaceutical companies. Also they say that they haven’t finalized it yet. I hope their will be more money because $690,000000 is not enough for $8,000 people, that’s $62,500 a piece. What about the people that died they deserve more….. way more money than that. They should v’e gave us at least a coupler billion, they can afford it.They’ll make that money back in half a year. They make about 4 billion a year.So if anybody caught diabetes by taking ZYPREXA…….. SUE. yours truly rc p.s. This is a life long disease.oh by the way I’m getting GASTRI BYPASS so my diabetes and getting rid of the excess weight. The dr. said if anyone had diabetes under 10 years that the operation will take it away, but you have to be 100 1bs overweight with health problems eg. diabetes bye

I’ve been on zyprexa for 3 years and have gained 60 pounds. Iam not diabetic yet but i tend to take alot of sweets because it helps me think clearly when i dont get enough sleep. Zyprexa has given me unbarable anxioty and small panic attakcs.

I feel that Zyprexa is a very dangerous drug and whoever is on it, should get off of it ASAP. My fiance was prescribed Zyprexa for one year and he is now dead because of it. He gained approx. 80lbs on the drug and it caused him to get diabetes which was never detected by his doctor. This caused him to go into a diabetic coma and die. I now have a son who will never see his father again because of this drug. I have filed a lawsuit and don’t feel it is fair for our lawsuit to be lumped into one with other people since only a handful of people have died from the drug. Zyprexa is very dangerous…

19 terry yurchak July 18, 2005 at 5:22 pm

i started on zyprexa in ‘97 gained about 80lbs. in little over 6 yrs. and now that i found out that i have sugar my depression has got worse because i can not leed a normal life i worry about doing alot of things that i never even entered my mind before because i have known quite a few people who got hurt in someway lost a foot or leg it is very scary for me to even go for a motorcycle ride anymore, like every says their settlement is not enough, even a million would not be enough because i cannot enjoy life like i used to, i wish they would find a cure for diabetes!!

20 SNewman July 28, 2005 at 10:12 pm

My daughter was prescribed ZyPrexa in 1999 and was misdiagnosed bipolar and suspected to be schizophrenic, and all the while she is in fact autistic, and reacted severely to zyprexa, with schizo reaction, hallucinations, agitation, weight gain, edema, among others. The doctors only look at the symtoms and refuse to look at these adverse side effects, lives are ruined, lost, and they should all be held accountable. My daughter is only 17 and has dealt with being told she was mentally ill now since age 11, and that is a true bitter pill to swallow!

21 Albert Clemens September 4, 2005 at 5:35 pm

i walked for three days was declared schizoaffective becasue of ocd reaction almost killed myself and now sometimes wish i was dead. zyprexa is an ineffective inhumane drug and should not be prescribed for anything except for treatment resistant schizophrenia.

22 Sean Hartford September 21, 2005 at 10:06 am

During a 3 month in-patient hospital stay in 2001, I was given Zyprexa, although not diagnosed as psychotic. In 4 months time I had gained over 100lbs. I’ve been lucky not to develop Diabetes, but I’m still suffering. I’m unable to do physical work in part because of the weight gain combined with fatigue and back pain. I still havent been able to lose the weight and I am worried about my health. However angry I get over taking Zyprexa, it was the prescribing physician and the Doctors and Nurses who should have been monitoring my weight and questioning why I was given the drug that I’m most concerned about. I dont want this or something worse to happen to someone else.

PATIENTS: do your own research, there are other alternatives and other anti-psychotics. Don’t let this or worse happen to you.

Together we can hopefully get Zyprexa and other dangerous drugs off the market.

23 Michelle Wheeler September 30, 2005 at 4:57 pm

I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder and then given Zyprexa. I was on the drug for over 8 years, and gained a least 60 lbs. Now I have Diabetes and have been living with that for over 7 years. My life has been shortened now and I won’t be able to enjoy some of the finer things in life, not to mention that I have NO INSURANCE to cover ANY of my medications, doctor bills and so forth because I’m ONLY 33 years old. I realize that I fortunate because I did take motorcycle rides and even survived a crash, BUT my life is important too!!! I would just like enough to be able to survive until I’m gone and Be able to pay for doctors bills and the medicaton that is needed to control my diabetes. Surgery would be wonderful, BUT HOW DO I PAY FOR A GASTRIC BYPASS when I can barely pay my BILLS. Any information on what I should do is welcome. P.S. I live in Wyoming.
