Fahrenheit 911: Disney Blocks Distribution of Anti-Bush Film

Fans of Michael Moore may not get to see his latest documentary, “Fahrenheit 911,” that criticizes President Bush, because The Walt Disney Company is blocking its Miramax division from distributing the film in North America.

The documentary links the Bush family and prominent Saudi Arabian families-including the family of Osama bin Laden-and criticizes the President’s actions before and after the 2001 attacks.

In a statement, Matthew Hiltzik, a spokesman for Miramax, said, “We’re discussing the issue with Disney. We’re looking at all of our options and look forward to resolving this amicably.”

Disney executives said they wouldn’t budge from their position.

“We advised both the agent and Miramax in May of 2003 that the film would not be distributed by Miramax,” said Zenia Mucha, a company spokeswoman, referring to Mr. Moore’s agent. “That decision stands.”

Ari Emanual, Mr. Moore’s agent, said Michael D. Eisner, Disney’s chief executive, asked him not to sell the movie to Miramax. Mr. Emanual said Eisner expressed concerns that the film may jeopardize the company’s business dealings in Florida, where Jeb Bush is governor.

“Michael Eisner asked me not to sell this movie to Harvey Weinstein; that doesn’t mean I listened to him,” Mr. Emanuel said. “He definitely indicated there were tax incentives he was getting for the Disney corporation and that’s why he didn’t want me to sell it to Miramax. He didn’t want a Disney company involved.”

Disney denies the accusation made by Mr. Emanual.

Fahrenheit 911 will be presented at the Cannes Film Festival this month.

Well, quite a few right-wing partisans are now blaming the ‘media’ for exacerbating the recent scandals, in which the current administration is immersed. Isn’t it funny? What really set their teeth on edge was a remark by House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. How dare she claim that President George W Bush is – gasp! – INCOMPETENT.

If you happen to believe that she hit the nail on the head, you might enjoy reading my proposed version of a state of the union that the NEXT president should deliver. To access it, you need only click on the hi-lited hyperlink below.
