In effort to diversify its workplace, Wal-Mart Stores will reduce bonuses for top executives if it fails to promote suitable women and minorities, the CEO announced last week.

To ensure accountability for its diversity initiatives, Wal-Mart has modified the compensation program for all officer-level management, “starting with me and my own compensation,” Lee Scott, Wal-Mart President and CEO, told employees and shareholders last week at the company’s annual meeting.

“Our goal is to make sure that the percentage of qualified minorities and women we promote is equal to the percentage who apply,” Scott said today, “and overall in 2003 we met that goal.” He went on to explain that if, for example, 50 percent of the qualified applicants for assistant store manager jobs are women, the company will work to ensure that at least 50 percent of the promotions actually go to women.

The announcement comes at a time when Wal-Mart is facing several lawsuits alleging that the retail giant discriminates against women and does not pay so-called “managerial” employees overtime.

H. Lee Scott claims that Walmart cares about the people and it’s

customers. If that is true, then explain this to me. I have worked for

Walmart for over two years. I am on SSI Disability and work part time at

the photo lab.I am trying very hard to put my life together. I recently moved and wanted to transfer to my position. As soon as I moved I talked to the photo manager and he stated he would talk to the personal department immediately, which he did. After waiting over a month I was told nothing was done! Then the personal department, which consists of one person, has the audacity to tell me that I may have to start as a new employee even though I have done everything I was suppose too! I will lose everything I have worked so hard for. Then because of the new

scheduling system, I may not even get a position in a lab which only has three people. The lab is understaffed. One of the workers was told if the lab was short, they would get some cashiers to cover. Cashiers that have NO TRAINING IN THE PHOTO DEPT! I have asked repeatedly for help but no one has done a thing! What is this? Is this consideration for your workers? On a private note, I have an EXCELLENT work record. Now I am left in the lurch, by this loving Walmart

corporation. I just want to say thank you for you kind compassion. I had

planned work there for a long time, and this cold, heartless corporation

ditched me. How does the CEO live with his conscience? If this matter is

not resolved I will make sure that everyone knows my plight! That

Walmart pushed a person on who is trying to put her life together, out

of a position without batting an eyelash. If anyone or any news column

wants the truth about the Walmart corporation, I will be more than happy

to tell them the TRUTH!
