More U.S companies are revising their employee handbooks to include language that bans workers from using mobile phones while driving.

The policy changes come after numerous cities and states across the United States have passed laws that prohibit drivers from using their hand-held mobile phones while driving.

“We felt cell phone use while driving was a fairly dangerous behavior,” said Mike Henderek, manager of safety programs for ExxonMobil, which banned its 88,000 employees from using cell phones while driving on company time June 1. ExxonMobil adopted the policy after assigning its own scientists to dissect the issue.

Companies are also making changes to their policies because of lawsuits that blame employers for accidents caused by their workers. Employers are attempting to develop policies that will prevent or reduce their liability.

But some attorneys say it is uncertain what kind of policy will guard companies against such liability.
