Robert A. Smith said he had a blood vessel burst in his brain, resulting in a stroke in May 2002, after taking an Herbalife product with ephedra, according to the lawsuit filed against Herbalife on his behalf in U.S District Court in Manhattan.

Smith is just one of the many individuals who are suing ephedra manufactures for selling products that reportedly caused heart attack, stroke and death, the Democrat and Chronicle reported.

Ephedra, also called Ma huang, is a naturally occurring substance derived from plants. Its principal active ingredient is ephedrine, which when chemically synthesized is regulated as a drug. In recent years ephedra products had been extensively promoted to aid weight loss, enhance sports performance, and increase energy.

The Food and Drug Administration in April banned the sell of ephedra-based products because their use was linked to more than 150 deaths since 1994, the Democrat and Chronicle reported.
