Russia Names Drug Used to End Hostage Crisis

November 25th, 2002 · 2 Comments

MOSCOW — Russia’s health minister, Yuri L. Schevchenko, acknowledged that Russian forces released Fentanyl, an aerosol version of a powerful painkiller, into a Moscow theater to end the hostage crisis last Saturday. The death toll of victims from the hostage siege stands at 120, all but two died from effects of the Fentanyl derivative.

Dr. Schevchenko said doctors were informed of the likelihood that hostages would need treatment for a drug overdose, but in interviews, Russian doctors said they received little or no notice that the hostages had been gassed.
