  Seems to me that 90 days worth of free credit-monitoring service is worth little when identity-theft can be an issue forever! (especially considering you can’t just up and change your social security number)

  I am very interested in a class action lawsuit. This constitutes breach of contract; why should we be expected to maintain our end of the bargain when they failed to protect our personal information-I feel Citi Financial is obligated to pay their debtors a significant monetary value to fulfill obligations.

  Citifinancial keeps saying that we should be ok because we already have a loan and can’t get another without positive identification. What they are avoiding is the fact that anyone who obtains this information will not likely go to Citifinancial, but will use it for fraud with any number of other companies. I was also told by Citifinancial on 6/09/05 that the data on the tapes was encrypted and the credit bureau would have to decode it. I have not seen in any news story that the data was encrypted. I feel that would be one of the first things they would mention. I also feel that they are lying to me. This is much more serious than they are making it out to be.

  Just got back from a local attorney who blew me and a friend off. I definitely want to sue. They get my money and they failed to keep my information safe, so why should we have to pay.

  I too think it is a must for a class action suit. I was told that the data was not encrypted on the tapes. Why would this just not be standard. Also why send such info through so many hands when they were instantly able to assure us that it would be sent elec. encrypted the next time around. This is obviously gross neglegence on both parts. What are these so called extra security measures they have been using when sending via UPS in the past and if so how was it even possible to lose a box with tracking etc. The future for us is imminent!

  I wonder if Citi Ceo Harry Goff and the board would be okay with the 90 day free monitoring as payment if their social numbers, DOB, mothers maiden name, etc were included in the “lost box”? I think something needs to be done, as we will forever be at risk…

How can we expect them to be able to keep our information confidental?? They have breached everyones information and that is unconstitutional. Something needs to be done and as a group.   After reading all your comments, I wholeheartedly agree on a class action suit. Citifinancial and UPS are both liable and should be sued for breach of contract and putting all of us in danger of losing everything we worked so hard to keep personal and confidential. It is a breach of trust. I am a 100 lb., 63 yr. old woman who now fears for her safety because my name, address and phone number were also on the tape as well as Social Security #, date of birth, etc.. I don’t know if anyone of you out there considered the physical danger implications. I certainly want to be notified by the attorney(s) who decide to pick up this hot potato. I also called 6 lawyers this morning and was told it was not their area of expertise. Right! I will be waiting to hear about what comes of all this.

  I feel that we should all do our best to research what Citi is doing to correct, or at least help us understand the problem. We should ask them questions like was the box ever located, is there any reason to believe it is on the street, etc. If it has been confirmed that UPS lost the package where was it last tracked, which one of their employees handled it last, etc. By having multiple people contact Citi to ask questions it will show that we are not simply upset, but we are genuinely terrified for our own well being and future financial status. Chances are pretty good that Citi and UPS will both see this string of messages and be proactive rather then sit back and wait for a lawsuit. Never the less, I will keep reading this chain of messages and add anything new that I find out, including any information on a qualified law firm.

  I didn’t sleep half the night thinking of the ramifications of the loss of these tapes. Just when I thought I was getting on top of my credit, this happens. I don’t need the stress, and they are responsible. Notify me of any class action suit. Newsweek had an excellent opinion piece on it this week (June 20 issue).   I just contacted the unidentified firm’s phone number listed in CitiFinancial’s form letter to enroll in “a credit monitoring service”. They asked for my SSN and I refused to continue with the enrollment. I believe that CitiFinancial should make better efforts to respond in a manner that does not increase risk by asking for SSN. This unknown firm also did not have my account information and refused to allow me to register my wife’s name even though she is also named on the CitiFinancial account. Bad problem - poor service. A 90 day progrma is inadequate and CitiFinancial should at least provide better service to the customers it placed at risk.

I just received my letter and my heart dropped; b/c my husband and I have just re-established our credit and then something like this happen. Even if I recieve a settlement someone can stll steal my financial doings later down the line my social security number is the key to all my life.   This whole situation is absolutely absurd. I called Citifinancial’s hotline and reamed them out for this offensive 90 day “bone” they are throwing us. Everyone knows professional identity thieves don’t use this info right away and lie dormant for a while hoping people will let their guard down five years or more from now! Everyone needs to put the pressure on Debby Hopkins (chief of operations with Citifinancial) who actually have the nerve to say, “Customer security is of paramount importance to Citigroup”! I asked Cififinancial to give me some way of contacting her and they said someone would call me back - surprise, surprise, they never called. Don’t give up - keep calling back!!!

  I received this letter about a week ago. Yesterday, I went into my email only to find someone had tried to take 2,500 out of my bank account through PayPal.

  You can retrieve missing passwords through Paypal by putting in your bank account number or credit card number. The bank accout number is on my application to citifinancial.

  I am looking for a class action suit also.

  Something to think about: if Citi was sending our information to the credit bureaus, and the information had out ssi#,our account info which included addresses, then it might have also included our date of birth for bureau verification. It that is the case, anyone can request a Credit Card using this info with an alternate mailing address. Citi group states we do not have to worry about our accounts with them, but who is going to protect us from credit being obtained from any other company. My wife and I are both very stress with this wholde issue. If any one knows of a case action lawsuit, please notify me, I gladdly live in Hidalgo County, where any experienced lawyer knows that our jurys do not take thing lightly.

  My husband just spoke with a person at our local Citifinancial office who completely lied to him telling him that we were not affected and we got the letter as a mass mail out. My husband then called the main office and was informed that we were affected by this and our information was contained within the missing box of tapes. I am FURIOUS!!!! I am very interested in the class action law suit and will be checking here frequently for any developments. Thank you for all who are supporting this issue and researching ways to recover everyone’s loss.

  There was an article on the web today about a Mount Laurel law firm filling a class action lawsuit against citgroup for the lost tapes. The article is by a Renee Winkler and all it says is that the lawsuit is being filed by a burlington county woman. Does anybody know anything about this?

  I just spoke with a paralegal at Pallettiere, Rabstein and Altman in Mt Holly, NJ. I think there is a law suit pending. He stated that if and when the suit is filed, I would be contacted.

  It takes years though.

  We should just continue to pay our damn loans and wait.

  This company has something brewing that they are not allowed to speak about yet.

  I spoke with two law firms on this. Both are interested in filing suit. One is Pellettieri, Robstein and Altman in NJ. The other is Keogh, Cox, & Wilson, Ltd.

  I also spoke with a customer service rep at headquarters. This person stated they are not going to forgive our debts.

  Call both of these law offices and get on board. That is the only thing we can do at this point.

  If anyone hears that they are forgiving our debts, please leave the name and phone number of the person whom you talked too.

  Believe me, we all would like to hear that.

I’m sorry for the mishap on Citifinancial’s part as well as for anyone else connected with this unfortunate situation. However I am very troubled that someone is using my name in a slanderous way, especially using my telephone number. I just wish I knew whom the big man is who felt free to invade my family’s privacy cause if I did he’d know what a Law Suit is all about. Any further sightings of my name or phone number will result in immediate legal action.

  I am also very interested in if there is a class action lawsuit. This is something that I will have to think about the rest of my life because they let all of my personal information out there. If the people that have the information decide to use that information 10 or 20 years from now Citi will be even more rude then they already have been. I want more then just a loan paid off (which already has been) this is crazy if they get away without giving people like us something to insure that if something happens we can deal with it!!

  Hi,

  My question is about a package lost by UPS. This package contains survey

  and test documents of more than 3000 Turkish students for which I worked

  one year to get neccessary permissions and 8 people worked in eight cities

  to collect this data. Now this 40 pouns parcel is lost its been missing for

  12 days. The tracking shows that its last checked in Stanton, PA. Me and

  the sender have been talking to UPS in both countries for five days, they

  say they are still looking for it. I don’t think they are going to find it.

  This parcel has been sent as very important document. May be it has no

  commercial value, copying, postage, and personal expences cost little bit

  more than $1,000, but how about may one year. I am a PhD student with

  scholarship and I have limited time to finish my study. Now I have to go

  Hi,

  My question is about a package lost by UPS. This package contains survey

  and test documents of more than 3000 Turkish students for which I worked

  one year to get neccessary permissions and 8 people worked in eight cities

  to collect this data. Now this 40 pouns parcel is lost its been missing for

  12 days. The tracking shows that its last checked in Stanton, PA. Me and

  the sender have been talking to UPS in both countries for five days, they

  say they are still looking for it. I don’t think they are going to find it.

  This parcel has been sent as very important document. May be it has no

  commercial value, copying, postage, and personal expences cost little bit

  more than $1,000, but how about may one year. I am a PhD student with

  scholarship and I have limited time to finish my study. Now I have to go

  back to Turkey get the permission from Ministry of Education, get the

  this whole thing is so ridicules, we need a lawsuit, keep us updated. This can effect us for the rest of our lives.

  Since I received my notification that my data was in the box that was lost, I have received numerous calls from telemarketers and scammers…even though I am on a “no call” list. I have even had people call MY PARENTS to get information about me. But the best thing of all is…I had charges crammed on my phone bill that are NOT MINE. When I try to call the company to fix this…I conveniently get cut off! I finally got a live body and they said they would credit my phone bill. After some research, I found out this company has been fined hundreds of thousands of dollars for “cramming”. It is not a coincidence that this started happening after my data was lost. I NEVER had this problem before. I have always been EXTRA CAREFUL with my information. I am moritified and TERRIFIED! I have spent 30 years building good credit and protecting my data…now I stand to lose it.

  This is very interesting news. I have also read that Citi Financial Mortgage has a Class Action suit against them for something else, but I cannot put my finger on it right now. If anyone knows about this please let me know as I have an issue with me.

  Selling off information is a billion dollar market today and not for a minute do I believe it was lost.

  Iam considering a lawsuit soon but

  if everyone would join this major undertaking filing against Citi Financial as the people and for the people we all would stand a better chance of winning.

  We wanted to join this discussion. We did contact a lawyer in our hometown who told us we had no case to which we told him you are crazy. It is true that this information getting into the wrong hands is something to worry about from now on. NOT just a limited time. Criminals are always at work. We had our checking account compromised right after we got the letter from CitiFinancial. We are fighting them every step of the way. They act like it is no big deal but, it did not happen to them. We are not taking this lying down. No way. Let us know about any updates.

  an extensive emailed list disclosing names, locations, position titles, AND SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER’S of all the employees of CitiFinancial Auto Western States Division was carelessly released by Richard Graham District Manager of CitiFinancial Auto in the Fall of 2004. He didn’t even attempt to retract the unopened emails! I was very upset because my SSN was on the list! I worked for CitiFinancial Auto in Billings MT for OVER 3 YEARS and from DAY ONE noticed their casual attitude about confidentiality, professionalism, and accountability. I think they should be held accountable with consequences. They don’t allow their customers to make excuses for late auto payments - they just send the repo truck!

  I was also notified about the possible theft of all my personal records. I am very nervous. I spent my whole life protecting my GREAT credit rating and now in one”mistake” someone may have destroyed all my hard work. Anyone from Wisconsin starting a class action?

  P.S. Even though it’s a “car loan” per se, my husband received the letter in the mail that his information had *poof* vanished into thin air.

  We’ve called just about every 800 number there is for CitiFinancial and they are all clueless about his loan. They keep telling us to call the local branch, but that b@$tard Dave is the one who cheated my husband. How is talking to him going to help us out? He keeps telling us that we owe MORE than the statements we get monthly from Corporate CitiFinancial say we owe. The statement even says the $5K isn’t a payoff and to call us, but Dave keeps insisting it IS a payoff. Paying off WHO is what I wonder?

  I’m considering filing a class-action lawsuit against CitiFinancial. I have already sent a letter to them as well to the Attorney General’s Office in the Northern District of CA. I would highly suggest others who are caught in this scheme of theft identity to do the same in your state. With enough of us common people putting on the pressure, the attorney generals will be forced to investigate this heinous crime of 3.9 million people. If we all focus on a class-action lawsuit together, or even as separate groups, against CitiFinancial, it will expose them to their fraudulent activities. Please let me know if anyone has already filed one. I would like to join with them or have them join me. Right now I am talking to law firms to determine which one will accomplish my goal for me and others like myself. I, too, believe in my heart this is just one big scam.   Give them a call and let them know your interested in being a part of a class action suit against Citifinancial.

  Hi to everyone. I feel so bad for all of those involved in scandal as I would call it. I was a Citifinancial employee until this morning. I have to tell you, tonite will be my best nite’s sleep in a long time. I think alot of what Citi does is so unethical and immoral. Por people come in, in the depths of despair and we were instructed to make sure we sold insurances every loan! Increasing the premium big time! The interest rates are already formidable-add in these insurance premiums, OMG, now these people are on the never ever plan! I have battled with my conscious, and listened to them tell me how they need the money, but then why are we phoning solicitation lists and badgering people to consolidate their debt with us? These people never said they needed us. And whats more, we are somehow convincing them that they have saved money doing this??? Lord! I’ll tell u, I really had a lot of sleepless nites, and I put out lots of resume’s. In the end-I couldn’t take it anymore, I quit my job this morning, so I can know in my heart, I am not bilking people out of hard earned money! I was to go on another course next week, I couldnt think of it. I am done with this company. And just so you know, I made sure they knew why I left!

  I also went to the local branch and was told that we were not affected yet we recieved the letter and every time we called the hotline they gave us we got cut off and my credit and my husbands credit is not even being watched. Does anyone know the main offices telephone number so i can find out for sure whether or not we are affected.I too am interested in a law suit

  my life has become a nightmare due to this company. it hurts just to repeat the name. they also lost my information. i have also been trying to find out my original loan vs what i have paid them to date. of course, i’m getting responses as to how the loan was re=newed several times and that started the loan all over. well, i feel that i wasn’t explained how this worked. i had insurance on this loan as well and have been unemployed two different times. they didn’t help me out because i was fired. i thought the insurance was supposed to help regardless. now i am facing surgery. they are not even nice about that. i have to get forms filled out by the employer and the doctor. they hound you for payments but you can’t get the answers you want. i know i have paid them way more than i have borrowed and this has been going on for years. they are making my life miserable. how can i get away from them and get them out of my life. please help.

  I got a loan from them for $6000.00 in December of 04 to pay off my bills. I sent in $400 a month and was told it would be paid off in 13 months. Yesterday I called them because its been 10 months. They told me my balance was $5860.00! SO i guess i’ve only paid $140.00. WHAT DO WE DO?

  It seems i’m not alone with regards to my frustration with Citifinancial. I took a $6000.oo loan, Paid it off in 11/05 and now they have lost those records as well…Who,s in charge anyway?
