BOSTON — Judge Constance M. Sweeny ordered today that 11,000 documents concerning the church’s handling of 65 priests accused of sexually abusing children be made available to the public. Last Friday, the archdiocese complied with a court order to give the documents to lawyers for four young men who claim Rev. Paul R. Shanley molested them.
Sweeny, who is responsible for hearing all the clergy sexual abuse lawsuits filed against the archdiocese, denied the archdiocese’s motion to delay the release of the documents to the public. Sweeny issued a handwritten order saying that, “the motion appears designed to escape the full force of the court’s multiple orders to produce documents and that these documents be opened to public inspection.
